Anavar, the brand name for oxandrolone, is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid. Scientists first developed it in the 1960s to promote weight gain after surgery, trauma, or infection. Medically, it still treats limited conditions. These include offsetting protein catabolism from prolonged corticosteroid use and relieving bone pain from osteoporosis. However, the FDA discontinued approved forms in the United States due to safety concerns.

How Does It Work?

Oxandrolone acts like testosterone. It binds to androgen receptors and stimulates muscle growth and protein synthesis. This mechanism drives its popularity among bodybuilders. They seek lean muscle gains with less water retention than other steroids. The compound has a high anabolic-to-androgenic ratio. Oxandrolone inhibits natural testosterone production through negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. This may cause erectile dysfunction, low libido, and mood disturbances during and after use.
